The case in of Mr E. J. Ackroyd of any vacancy hereafter occurring in the Legal Branch of the service.
I have known Mr. Ackroyd for many years, as we both served in the Island of Mauritius, when he was universally respected both for his uprightness of character and his practical business ability.
He filled on several occasions, important posts in Mauritius during temporary vacancies; and no chance having presented itself for recognizing his services in that Colony he was promoted, in 1881 to be Registrar of Supreme Court of Hong Kong.
As is well known, the Registry of the Supreme Court had been in a chaotic state, or confusion for some years previous to his arrival, but Mr. Ackroyd soon succeeded in establishing order to the great satisfaction of the Judges, the Solicitors, and the Public.
